ESD Track Program Overview

The goal of a conditioning program should be to improve sports performance, not just to improve recovery time.

With hockey being an anaerobic sprint sport, the ESD program focuses on the improvement of a hockey players’ SHIFT endurance (30 – 45 seconds), and the importance of improving the explosive first few steps ( hockey strides), to either close the gap or to separate the distance from the opposition. The majority of the ESD training sessions is designed with this philosophy. The program consists of running 400’s, 200’s, short distance sprints, shuttle runs, repeats, pro runs, and more!

Focused Components

The goal of a conditioning program should be to improve sports performance, not just to improve recovery time. Asking athletes in sprint dominated sports, like hockey, to develop a base through long steady runs can lead to muscular degradation in length, range of motion, and overuse. The ability to tolerate the muscular forces generated by accelerating and decelerating and the ability to adapt to additional metabolic stress caused by acceleration and deceleration are the real keys to conditioning and our ESD track program.

  • Complete Sprinting and Acceleration Program – Distance Sprints of 400’s, 200’s, 100’s, 60’s, 40’s, 20’s, Repeats, Changing Gears, Tempo Runs
  • Quick Feet Drills using Ladders, Cones, and Hurdles
  • Agility / Change of Direction Runs
  • Resistance bands / Parachutes
  • Shuttle Runs, Pro Runs
  • First Step Explosive Movements
