Explosive Movement Program

Explosive Movement Program Overview

We must always remember that for athletes, their primary motive is to increase performance and to enhance movement, “the improvement of athleticism“. The Explosive Movement Program (EMP) is designed to improve one’s sports performance by improving their explosive power while incorporating speed, agility, and quickness. The ability to decelerate, redirect and accelerate is crucial to an athlete’s sports performance especially in hockey.

Focused Components

EXPLOSIVE POWER – The ability to train for Explosive Power is best described as teaching the muscular system to develop maximum force over a brief period of time. Example of exercises includes the use of sled runs and band runs.

SPORT-SPECIFIC SPEED TRAINING – Training drills that are closely related to the demands of sports through mechanical and velocity exercises. Exercises designed to work on start speed, acceleration, or absolute speed. Two key areas that will focus on this are the use of reaction lights on the turf field, and the various multi directional sprinting drills in the sandpit

REACTION LIGHTS – Improving the athletes response time is a key component in enhancing athletic performance and strengthening the bond between the mind and the body.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING – Is best described as a continuum of exercises that teach athletes to handle their own body weight in all planes of movement. Functional Training Trains Movements, Not Muscles.

SAND TRAINING – There has been a rapid increase in the amount of professional athletes and college sports teams incorporating sand workouts into their programs. When you train in the gym or outside, the ground acts almost like a trampoline, it simply absorbs force and shoots that force back, helping you accelerate and move faster and easier.

The story is much different when training in the sand. The sand is comprised of many layers, and as a result, you will sink 2-3 inches with every step. This requires you to exert a greater amount of ENERGY and an increased amount of MUSCULAR STRENGTH compared to training on solid ground. After training in the sand, level ground training will make you feel like you’re accelerating downhill!

  • Sand Training strengthens the stabilizer muscles of the ankle, knees, and hips.
  • Improves balance and agility
  • Improves core and rotational strength
  • Corrects structural imbalances
  • Enhances aerobic, anaerobic and lactate threshold, Increasing caloric expenditure and mechanical work demands.
